Anthropic said it stopped multiple attempts by scientists this year to use its technology for research that could help develop biological weapons, as experts increasingly fear the threat that AI poses to public safety. The startup gave five examples of times actors “circumvented controls” and made other efforts to “obfuscate” the purpose of their research to dodge safeguards. The cases involved some users in nations that it prohibits from accessing its models, which include Russia, China, and Iran. “We hope that by sharing these examples, we spark a conversation within the AI industry and with governments about emerging biological risks and how best to counter them,” Anthropic said in a report about efforts to use its models for malicious activity. The article describes real instances of AI misuse attempts to facilitate dangerous biological weapons research by circumventing safeguards. This presents a significant threat to public safety and global security, though the risks are currently being managed by the company. The potential harm from misuse of AI in bioweapons development justifies a materially concerning negative score.

The report shows both a real risk (attempted misuse for bioweapons research) and a mitigating success (safeguards caught it). The self-reported nature and lack of independent verification limits certainty, but the underlying dual-use threat to biosecurity is a serious, well-documented concern in AI safety discourse.

Users successfully bypassed AI safeguards to perform research potentially relevant to bioweapons. This demonstrates a vulnerability in current safety measures against malicious use of AI for harmful purposes. The incidents occurred despite developer efforts to prevent such misuse, directly impacting human safety.
